THE MOST IMPORTANT CALL IN LIFE

THE MOST IMPORTANT CALL IN LIFE
About 2,000 people in Serbia are waiting for a donor and an organ transplant. Most, unfortunately, do not receive the call that means life for them. At Hemofarm Foundation, we firmly believe that our society has enough strength and humanity to change it. We have already completed a part of the voyage since 2016, when our “The Most Important Call in Life” campaign was launched for the first time. The number of donors tripled at the time, because, with the help of various institutions, organizations, festivals and distinguished individuals, the campaign raised awareness of the importance of organ donation in our society. The Law on Transplantation of Human Organs was also adopted, which the Government of Serbia amended once again in 2023, so that we all become potential organ donors until we declare otherwise. The National Donor Day was also declared – 6 June.

In 2019, we declared the second half of the match for life and invited our best athletes to action. We decided to, playing the card of national pride, reverse the result which at that moment showed that the surrounding countries had a significantly higher number of organ donors than Serbia, and that we were at the very bottom of the European table. “I am a donor too! Because I support Serbia” said our sports winners Ivana Španović, Maja Ognjenović, Dejan Stanković, Dejan Savić, Branko Lazić, Dragan Škrbić, Zoran Tošić. Proven champions have made a champion contribution to spreading the truth and fighting prejudice, thereby increasing the number of donors, and saving people's lives.

And then came the biggest public health crisis, COVID 19, so the national transplant program was almost completely stopped. In 2022, only two transplants were announced. That is why, at the invitation of the Ministry of Health of Serbia and the Republic Health Insurance Fund, in 2023 we relaunched a campaign that encourages the culture of donation. By November 2023, 12 families had consented to have their loved ones' organs transplanted, saving 30 lives. “The Most Important Call in Life” became the most awarded campaign of Hemofarm Foundation.

It’s a long way to achieving our objective, as we need minimum ten donors per million per million inhabitants to make the waiting list for organ transplantation disappear. The match of life continues, and in it we all have a 20 times greater chance of needing an organ than of being a donor. Saving a life is a heroic act, and we are here to remind you that anyone can be a hero. So - become a donor.
